Dear Elsternwick Club Members,
Well our isolation continues, and with the recent spike in cases in Melbourne, opening dates are even more uncertain. With rules as to maximum numbers of patrons, 1.5 metre social distancing, plus number of square metres per patron, it is often uneconomic for venues with paid staff to open. You will all be advised as to our opening date as soon as it is decided. Hopefully this is not too far off, however we are controlled by the rules set by the Victorian Government.
Personally I hate this cold weather and, like many other TEC members, Peter and I should have been spending these cold days in sunny northern Australia. But with coronavirus, border lockdowns and the closure of Virgin Airlines we are stuck in Melbourne for the foreseeable future. We empathize with other travellers in this position. Hopefully deposits are refunded.
Dates Already in Place
Bowls Victoria have mandated the following opening dates :-
All bowlers, who have not already indicated their intention to play, will be contacted by a Committee member over the next few weeks, to ascertain which days you wish to play.
Dates for TEC events
As a recent committee meeting, the following dates were decided:-
These dates all depend on coronavirus restrictions being eased. If restriction are still in place, then members will be placed on a first in, best dressed, list after indicating their intention to attend.
These popular days will commence in the week immediately following our official Opening of the Green. Social bowls will be held every Wednesday and Friday afternoon with green fees of $10 pp. These days will offer an opportunity for all TEC members to support our Club.
Friends and members of other clubs are encouraged to attend. If restrictions are still in place then numbers may need to be limited. Once again, a registration list would be established.
Registration of attendance
At all coming events it is anticipated that a registration of attendance (as currently in place at cafes and restaurants) will need to be completed. This will include your name, contact number and hours of attendance. The Victorian Government has mandated that these lists will need to be kept by the Club as a record of attendance of both members and visitors, until the current crisis is under control.
The TEC Board has decided that membership fees for next season will remain at the same level as the current season. As per our Constitution, this will be ratified at our Annual General Meeting. These fees may now be made at the Club via credit card. Paying immediately will assist the Club with its diminished cash flow. Fees must be paid by September, as capitation fees need to be paid to Bowls Victoria.
Annual General Meeting
At present, no date has been set for our TEC 2020 Annual General Meeting. Members will be notified in due course. Numbers may be limited if coronavirus restrictions are still in place.
With the 4sq m rule per person, 1.5m social distancing, plus restricted numbers, we are upset to announce that, at present, it is not feasible to run this event. Rest assured your booking is still recorded, plus extra tickets will be on sale as many members were unfortunately going to be overseas for our March date. If this event looks to be scheduled to later in the year, eg until after the start of the new bowling season, then the Committee has discussed presenting some of our 2019-2020 trophies at our 2020 AGM. All these plans are in abeyance until updated rules are announced by the Victorian Government.
Tuesday Midweek Finals.
Until last Thursday evening, our Tuesday Division 2 side was ready to play in the Sectional Grand Final at Vermont South next Thursday. We had already been given a walkover by Mentone for the semi-final scheduled for Tuesday. Then late Thursday evening, Bowls Victoria announced that all Sectional finals have been cancelled pending further notice.
During our lockdown, David Heathershaw has continued to upgrade our gardens. Extra camellias have been planted along the walkway, and ferns and clivea are being planted in the shady area on the left as you approach the front entry.
The gaming area plus the adjoining members sitting area have both been freshly painted.
Current bowls games position and bowls practising
Many enthusiastic TEC members, along with some bowlers from Murrumbeena Park, have been regularly playing bowls on two rinks behind the Carnegie Velodrome at Packer Park. Entrance is via Clarence Ave. This is an open area, owned by the Council, and is free for players to have a roll. All members are welcome to roll up at any time, or if you can cope with these cold days and wish to play a match, then ring George Arbib or Max Flanigan for details.
Coaching at TEC
Because of limited funding, Mick Gardner’s contract as coach of bowls at TEC was not renewed. We thank Mick for his contribution and enthusiasm over the past few years.
Mick has indicated that he and Kristy will not be playing at Elsternwick Club next season. We wish them both the best. Our coaching will now be undertaken by our team of coaches.
Even with isolation, footy tipping is continuing at TEC. I have asked Glen to investigate if members’ progress can be placed on a spreadsheet and then updated and uploaded weekly on the Club website, so that members are aware of how well, or in my case how poorly, they are doing. Don’t forget to let the Club know your weekly selection by email or phone, before 5:00pm each Thursday.
This has been a very successful initiative by the Bowls Committee, and we thank Greg Wood for his organization. At time of printing we have only three boards left for sale.
Here is an opportunity for you to show your support for your Club. You are able, through this project, to show that you are a loyal member who values the impact that the Club has in their lives. These past months have had a devastating effect on our Club finances. Any support you are able to give is truly appreciated. Other bowls clubs, owned by Councils, do not have to ask their members for financial support. We rely on the goodwill of our Members. The three boards available are only $550, and include a plaque acknowledging your donation.
During this time of isolation, we have endeavoured to keep members updated on happenings at the Club. Several of the newsletters, including this one, have been printed and posted to those with no email access. I do hope that all the photos are upright, not sideways as some members have told me. Be assured that they are the correct way up when the newsletter is emailed. It must be the internet gremlins at work !! I am grateful for the phone calls and emails from members, showing their appreciation when they receive these frequent updates. Your support is valued. Our “phone a member” initiative has also been well received by members, and has kept us up to date with what members are doing while in isolation – generally not too much !!! Please continue to contact others until we are all back at Sandham Street, bowling and socializing with other members.
This has been a very difficult time for The Elsternwick Club and we will all need to give 100% support to our Club once it reopens. If you play social bowls elsewhere, please reconsider. We need your support at TEC and your attendance will help to improve the numbers at each event and may provide a challenging standard for all attendees.
Your attendance at social events, Friday night drinks, etc., will assist with the reopening and hopeful revitalization of our Club.
Stay well, Gabrielle
